Liam was just 24 when he passed away in a road traffic accident on New Year’s Day 2019, and Dave recently published a blog about his son and their relationship with football shortly after Arsenal’s opening day victory over Newcastle.

Speaking to Natalie Sawyer, Ian Holloway and former Arsenal star Perry Groves on Monday, Dave explained he took a break from going to games following Liam’s death.

And he told talkSPORT about returning to the Emirates for the first time without his son by his side last season, and how Arsenal helped remember the young Gunners fan.

He said: “The first game I went to afterwards was the Chelsea game [a 2-0 victory at the Emirates on January 19] and the club were amazing.

“They did an obituary in the programme about Liam and the club sent a letter from Laurent Koscielny, who was obviously captain at the time, and it was ridiculously emotional.

“It was a great game, we beat Chelsea and I still involuntarily celebrated when the goal went in, but instantly then just collapsed into my seat. It was a conflict of emotions, the natural reaction and then the feeling that I can’t share it with him.

“The last home game we went to together was the north London derby in December.

“At the time it didn’t mean much, but there was a clip of us celebrating on Sky Sports after we scored, so I’ve actually got that live video of the two us from our last game together.”
