Simon Harmer and James Porter shared fifteen wickets between them as Essex completed a resounding victory against the visiting Nottinghamshire side on Thursday (16 May) in Chelmsford.
Resuming their innings at 90 for 6, Notts added 68 runs to their overnight score and set the home team a target of 105 to chase. Harmer finished with a six-fer in the second innings and his spell proved to be a massive telling factor in determining the outcome of the game.
Needing 105, Essex lost opener Nick Browne – the only half-centurion in the game – cheaply in the first over owing to a run-out, but Tom Westley (out for 49) and Sir Alastair Cook (40 unbeaten) made short work of the run chase and sealed the game by eight wickets.
This is Essex’s first Championship win of the season while Nottinghamshire suffered their second successive loss after enduring an innings defeat at the hands of Somerset in their previous game.
Brief scores: Nottinghamshire 187 and 158 (Ben Duckett 37; Simon Harmer Porter 6-60) lost to Essex 241 and 105/2 (Tom Westley 49; Samit Patel 1-13) by 8 wickets.
