My dog’s great escape

Friday, March 24th, 2006

They were all pretty hyped up today so walking them was a challenge. And that is what triggered my memory.

Two of my dogs are involved in dog therapy programs; that means I go visiting the seniors with my dogs. This particular day of the great escape I had all three dogs in the jeep because we had been out for a walk in the park. I had decided to make a quick stop and visit one of our senior friends on the way home.

My dogs have been trained never ever to leave the vehicle until I say
”OK”. They have always been very good in obeying this command. But, not today, nope, today they are getting ready to freak me out. As my dogs tend to do every once in a while.

I arrived at HOME ON THE HILLS, that is where Benny and I go visiting. I will leave Nikki and Dukie, the blind one, in the jeep. Today we will only stop by for a short visit.

I reminded my dogs that they must stay and not come out of the jeep. The parking lot is full and since it is a beautiful day, many of the seniors are “hanging” around outside the front door. There are seniors in wheel chairs, with canes, or just standing around.

I opened my jeep, and what happened? I just could not believe it! All of my dogs jumped out. Just like that, they jumped out. Nikki, the leader of the gang is running at full speed towards the front door. Benny is of course running right behind Nikki. And, my Dukie is also running, he just doesn’t know where to run to because he cant see where he is going.

Well, I freaked and screamed and chased my dogs. Of course there is no way I can catch them. I could just picture those poor seniors being knocked over like bowling pins by my fast approaching excited dogs, ready to greet everyone they see. “Wow, look at all the people to jump on.”

I screamed some more, and luckily some nurses were outside and heard me. They helped round up my dogs. I cant believe that no one was hurt or knocked over. Wow, someone was looking out for us.

Meantime, I am shaking. I am also not wearing running shoes. Heck, I didn’t mean to go running today, just walking. I slipped in the parking lot and lay there like an idiot, still screaming for everyone to be careful. Of course I was also terrified that one of my dogs would get run over.

I am a diabetic, so my sugar level went haywire on top of it all. When we finally got all my dogs leashed and put back in the jeep I was exhausted. I did not know whether to cry or laugh, or just pass out. Or maybe do all three of those things.

Anyways, we did survive this ordeal. And it taught me a lesson. Never ever assume my dogs will listen all of the time. I never did go back in to visit that day; I was too shaken with what could have been. Thank God nothing did happened that day.

We all drove home and calmed down. Soon this incident was forgotten. Except for every once in a while when those memory triggers hit, and then my heart beats all over again.

Dog Therapy Visiting has been a passion of mine for 5 years. I first became involved in this work when visiting a friend in the hospital. A beautiful Golden Retriever silently walked into the room and instantly brought comfort. That was Tasha. Tasha and her owner became my mentors.]]>

My Prized Piece of Baseball Memorabilia

Thursday, March 23rd, 2006

I used to deal in baseball cards, and some memorabilia in the mid to late 1980’s. Through an old client I had the opportunity to sell a very rare piece of baseball lore. The piece that I was fondest of was a rare document signed by Harry Wright. A founding father of the game. The document was a contract of some player that was signed by Harry Wright, the manager, circa 1870. It was written on Cincinnati Red Stocking’s letterhead.

I was impressed. I was so excited to be entrusted with this rare artifact. I remember saying to myself.
“Oh my god. You have got to be kidding.”
I was astonished. I was in awe. I felt like I was let into a special group.

I sold the piece in the range of $10,000 - $12,000 if memory serves me. But selling the piece did not compare to the dreams I had about the contract.

Imagine, what it must have been like 130 years ago on the ball field. The baggy uniforms, and the teeny gloves for the players. The pitchers, hurling both games of a double header was common practice and a home run was a rarity. Boy has the game changed.

Handling that document made the early times of baseball real for me. I visualized those men playing in those old ballparks. I felt like I was part of that time. I was having a dream. I was there, back in the late 1800’s sitting in the stands. Smiling and watching baseball - Back in the day.

Handling this artifact was like punching a time clock and never punching out. I was in baseball memorabiliaville.

I can see why some people are so zealous about baseball memorabilia. Their baseball fantasy made a lot more sense to me after I sold this Harry Wright piece.]]>

Never paddle alone!

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

One of the biggest rules of thumb when it comes to kayaking is that you should never paddle alone. The reasons for this are many, but most of all, if you make sure that you have somebody with you, then you’ll be able to stay safe in almost any situation. Having an extra person with you means that if something happens to one of you, the other one will be there to help out - either with the first aid kit, with going for help, or even just by being somebody on the other end of a throw rope.

Never paddle alone is a good idea for other reasons as well. For instance, if you’re going to be kayak touring, chances are good that you’ll see a lot of amazing things - and it’s always good to have another person there to share them with you. Plus, it will likely be a fun and exciting event to share with your friend.

Another thing that you should consider is that if you never paddle alone, then you’ll be able to go kayaking in the wilderness without feeling too lonely. After all, it can be very lonely to be alone out on the water with just you and your kayak. If you have another person to talk to, you’ll more than likely have more fun out there.

You will also have somebody nearby to encourage you if you start to feel at all discouraged. For that reason, if you never paddle alone, you’ll probably be better able to go kayaking without getting discouraged and stopping. This is a good thing to keep in mind if you are going to be kayaking in an area where the going might get a little rough - the last thing you want is to be stuck somewhere alone, and not want to continue.

Finally, and most obviously, never paddle alone is told as a general rule because it is the best way to make sure that you will be safe when you are kayaking. In addition to this, however, you should make sure that other people who are not accompanying you on your trip also know where you will be kayaking. That way if anything happens, the emergency teams will know where to look for you.

However, if you make sure that you never paddle alone, then chances are good you’ll be able to have a safe, fun time on the water.]]>

Next Time: Get A Golf Cart

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

Golf originates from a medieval game played on the coast of Scotland during the 15th century. Golfers would hit a pebble instead on a ball around the sand dunes using a stick or club. As time passed, stones were exchanged for man-made balls, the earliest of which were thin leather bags stuffed with feathers. The gutta-percha ball was not invented until 1848 and could be hit a maximum distance of 225 yards. In 1899 rubber balls were invented that could reach distances of 430 yards. Golf sticks evolved into carefully weighted golf clubs, and in the 1880’s golf club bags first became fashionable. The caddie, a servant who carted all the player’s gear aound the golf course, had his burden lessened by the invention of the golf car in the early 1950’s.

The first golf car manufacturers were E-Z-Go, Pargo, Harley Davidson and Cushman. The price was astoundingly high for this era, $1200, but as more manufacturers entered the field it dropped to $600, still high in terms of inflation. E-Z-Go still manufactures golf cars today. There are hundreds or golf car manufacturers listed on the internet, and most of these companies specialize in these small vehicles, and do not make larger cars.

The first golf cars were gas-powered, but recently the market has shifted to more battery-powered models. Golf carts can be customized just like cars, and lift kits and ATV wheels are sold to golfers who want to stand out on the course. There are companies which specialize in creating entire custom golf cars, or miniaturized versions of full sized cars, such as the Humdinger (Humvee), mini Jeep, Rolls-Royce, Cadillac or Mercedes-Benz.

Golf carts come in 3 forms: manual push/pull carts, electric motorized carts, and electric or gas golf cars that hold passengers as well as gear. Push/pull carts have 2 or 3 wheels and a vertical support for a golf bag. They are basically manual dollies with clips and holders especially adapted for golf gear, and sell for $50 to $100. Moving up a level in sophistication, motorized golf caddies cost approximately $500 all the way up to $1000. Golf cars, which resemble dune buggies in size, start at about $1800 for a small basic model.

Ebay has a large selection of both new and used golf carts at low prices but service can be a problem with small vendors.

Manufacturers are also expanding their sales by renaming carts “Electric Utility Vehicles” and suggesting alternate uses for them, such as hauling lawn equipment and traveling around rural properties.]]>

“IF YOU CAN TELL ME WHO YOUR HERO’S ARE I CAN TELL YOU HOW YOU’RE GOING TO TURN OUT IN LIFE” Warren Buffett

This quote hit the nail right on the head, we take on the attitudes and beliefs of our peers and hero’s. That is why it is important to have focused, positive and supportive people around us and to rid ourselves of anyone who brings us down. That is how to achieve and obtain a high level of success in our fight careers and in life in general. Champions are made up by a team/group who contribute their knowledge and effort for the attainment of a definite goal or purpose “ THE TITLE BELT” It’s important and essential that your team is this way for you to be a champion. Choose to associate with people who share common goals and have a strong desire to contribute to the overall effort. Trail and error is part of the process. Sort out what strengths and weakness’ you have when it comes to your fight game, look for individuals to help you eliminate your weakness’. Sort out each team member’s strength’s and weakness’ and in fine tuning your plans each team member should have a specific purpose or responsibility to make you a better fighter and bring out the best in you and your abilities in the ring and outside of it.

Paintball Guns – Tips to help you choose a marker

Sunday, March 19th, 2006

When paintball games first took off, players had to make do with basic guns that could only shoot a single shot each time they were cocked. Then technology advanced to pumps, where you could feed paintballs into the breach by rocking your gun forward. Paint tubes came next, which allowed paintballers to fire many times. After that, hoppers were introduced, which were thought to be a fantastic advance for the sport as they could hold all the paint you’d need for the game.

Semi automatic guns then appeared on the scene, which fired balls much faster. Motorized loaders were added and Autocockers became all the rage, especially among paintballers who played in tournaments. Now a range of electronic guns are available, that can be programmed to do whatever you want. Full autos can carry on firing as long as the trigger is down, and offer a selection of firing modes and adjustable rates of fire. Because they can shoot so fast, many recreational paintball fields require players to put a tournament lock on their gun before they play so as not to have an unfair advantage over their opponents.

Which type of marker you buy depends on your level of ability and how often you want to play. For beginners, many stores offer special paintball gun packages, which include all the basic equipment such as masks, air tanks and hoppers. These starter kits can be good value. Good entry level brands that are reasonably priced include Kingman Spyder, Tippmann and Piranha guns. Look for guns that allow upgrades, so you can build your own gun by trying different barrels and triggers, as your skills progress. For more advanced paintballers, quality markers include Smart Parts and Angle electronic guns.

A combination of tactical skills, team strategy and a reliable gun are key. Good paintball markers should be light enough to easily maneuver, while being robust enough to stand up to the fast paced action. There are some fantastic online paintball stores that sell a range of guns and paintball supplies at affordable prices, so you should be able to find a gun that’s right for you and your budget!]]>

Paraquedismo – Brazil’s Parachuting

Saturday, March 18th, 2006

Such is the experience of parachuting, a sport rapidly gaining popularity in Brazil. The locals are not the only ones taking advantage of Brazil’s world-class parachuting facilities and natural beauty to admire from so high up in the sky. Travelers to the country are now also adding the exotic Brazilian natureza to their experience of this action-packed sport.

However, as the first word of this article states, being ready is essential to parachuting. As with any action sport, training is an imperative component of a successful parachuting experience. In Brazil, you will find three different ways to begin your journey learning to parachute. The first type of jump is called o salto duplo, known as tandem in English. This jump takes the least training, and is a good option for those who think they are interested in trying parachuting just once, to cross it off the “things to do before I die” list. In tandem, you are sharing a parachute with a trained instructor on your back – fortunately he’s only on your back in the literal sense, to control the situation and to pilot a safe and enjoyable ride for you. Tandem is the safest and simplest way for the novice jumper to experience parachuting.

For those who are may be interested in learning to parachute with the aim of eventually being able to perform their own jumps, the other two types will be more interesting. Of these, the Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) will likely come first. After intensive training, this jump involves two instructors holding you upon jumping, eventually leaving you on your own to release the parachute and land safely. High levels of confidence, fitness, and training are necessary to perform this well, and the AFF course is intense enough to prepare you for this.

A step further beyond the AFF is the Static Line jump. This jump is performed completely solo, and is sometimes only recommended or allowed for those who have successfully completed AFF training and jumping. Naturally, jumping alone means the jumper has complete control of what he is doing. While the parachute will automatically release, the skydiver must know how to manually release the line if a problem arises, and must be able to land smoothly to avoid injury. Static Line, therefore, takes the most training and preparation.

Armed with this knowledge, the last step left is to choose the site where you will jump! To maximize safety, be sure the company you go with provides parachutes, airplanes, and instructors of only the best caliber. Checking that the club you are interested in parachuting with is a member of the United States Parachute Association will confirm that this particular club upholds the safety standards of the USPA.

Be ready to enjoy one of the most exhilarating times of your life, when you become absolutely extraordinary, taking part in one of the most radical activities a human can participate in.]]>
